At Fire District 3, we believe that there are efficient ways of meeting the community’s needs by strategically utilizing our resources based on the severity of the emergency. Often times, a fire engine with firefighters is not required for the EMS needs of our community members. Based on an advanced triage process through emergency communications (911), it may be more appropriate to send Community Care Providers to respond to the call. Community Care is staffed by EMTs and Paramedics.

The Community Care Program can help district patrons with navigating the complex health care system. Instead of having the patient go to the hospital emergency room in an ambulance, an alternative destination or treatment plan may be available such as Tele-health, Urgent Care or Physician Clinics. The Community Care Program works with our patrons to determine the best and most cost-effective health care treatment for their situation. This requires team members to utilize a mix of skills in emergency medicine, social work, problem solving, and a keen knowledge of community and health services that are available.

The Community Care Program is a critical part of our Community Risk Reduction efforts. Although they do respond to emergency 911 calls when needed, they also follow up on referrals from fire engine crews and district patrons who need additional assistance, such as social services.
