If
you've been ordered to evacuate, follow the order! It's for your protection!
Make
sure your driveway is wide enough for fire trucks.
Driveways should
be wide enough and layed out so a fire truck can easily maneuver in
and out and get turned around. Long driveways should have turnouts or
be wide enough for two way traffic.
When
wildfire strikes.......
Listen for high-low siren warnings of evacuation.... Tune in to your
radio/television for emergency messages.... Move vehicles into the garage
or away from structures.... Move outdoor furniture inside or away from
structures.... Remove light curtains from windows. Close heavy curtains
and blinds.... Close doors, windows and vents.... Connect garden hoses
and nozzles. Leave turned on.... Put house ladders to roof.... Shut
off gas/propane supplies.... Back car into garage so you can leave quickly.
Close garage door behind you.
Spark
arrestors can prevent fires. Install
a spark arrestor on your fireplace or wood stove chimney.
Keep
your roof clean. Dead
leaves and needles on your roof or in your rain gutters can easily catch
fire. Clean your roof regularly.
Your
roof is the most critical part of your home.
If you have a wood shake roof, consider replacing it with fire
resistive or non-combustible roofing material.
Wood
piles and
other combustible storage should be kept at least 30 feet from your home
or other structures.
.
Cut
grass and weeds regularly. A
buildup of grass and weeds can allow a fire to spread into trees or other
combustible items. Keep grass well watered during fire season.
Reduce
vegetation, trees and brush around your home.
If you live in a wooded area, remove dead, overcrowded, and weakened
trees within at least 30 feet of your home. In a more hazardous area,
remove vegetation within 100 feet. This area of reduced or cleared vegetation
will create a defensible space around your home.
Address
Yourself! We can't help you if we can't find you!
During an emergency, time is critical. Make sure your driveway and home
are addressed with signs visible from the street. Numbers should be reflective
and at least 3" tall.
